Don't you just wish you could have been there!
One of the most historic jazz records ever recorded, Louis Armstrong & Duke Ellington - The Great Summit: The Master Takes brought together in the studio - for the first and only time - the two most influential figures in jazz. Recorded in April, 1961, this 17-track collection was digitally remastered and released as a CD by Blue Note's Roulette Jazz label in 2001.
The format is a very interesting one as Duke Ellington assumed the piano chair in the 1961 version of Armstrong's All Stars band. Rather than performing Armstrong's usual repertoire, however, the two giants chose to record a selection of Ellington's best compositions. The resulting album allowed Duke to play some of his most sensitive, relaxed jazz piano on record and gave Satchmo a chance to stretch out on some unfamiliar material, which he does with his usual flair and inventiveness.
The genuine feeling between these two giants is almost palpable as they jam their way through some Ellington favorites. And, with Louis Armstrong & Duke Ellington- The Great Summit: The Master Takes you'll feel like you're right there with them!
Lucky you!
