July 3, 1958, was a very special day in jazz history. It's the day that the Miles Davis Sextet took the stage at the Newport Jazz Festival and turned the afternoon heat up to white hot.

And no wonder with such a stellar collection of players: Miles Davis, trumpet; Julian "Cannonball" Adderley, alto saxophone; John Coltrane, tenor saxophone; Bill Evans, piano; Paul Chambers, bass; and Jimmy Cobb on the drums. Man!

Miles Davis at Newport 1958,  first released in 1964, pulls together seven amazing tracks into one must-have CD. These live recordings previously were available only on other albums. See Record Details and Tidbits below.

This blistering performance took place just eight months before the same lineup recorded Something Blue, considered to be Davis' masterpiece, as well as the definitive jazz album of all time.

Can you believe that Bill Evans - one of the greatest pianists in jazz history, and John Coltrane - one of the most significant saxophonists in jazz history - were relatively unknown at the time! And, Miles Davis at Newport 1958 marked Coltrane's first recorded performance. Mix these two with legends-in-the-making Davis, Adderley, Chamber and Cobb, and you'll understand why this CD is one can't-miss wild ride!

"It's obvious Davis was pulling out all the stops for this audience, bringing down the house, and perhaps realizing himself just what this band was capable of musically." - Thom Jurek, All Music
