What happens when the family-owned, highly innovative, deeply-dedicated-to-its-craft company that makes what we think are the best organic maple syrups in the country collaborates with a fellow Vermont, family-owned company that also is highly innovative and deeply dedicated to its craft and makes the world's most-awarded rye whiskey?

WhistlePig Whiskey Barrel-Aged Maple Syrup, that's what.

Two Vermont favorites were combined by aging Runamok's pure, organic maple syrup in WhistlePig Rye Whiskey barrels for 9 months. The result is a delightful, barrel-aged syrup that's perfect for sweet and savory dishes, as well as cocktails.

These is magic is in those barrels. WhiskeyPig Rye Whiskey is aged in custom, Vermont Oak barrels that are made from trees harvested directly from its farm in Shoreham, Vermont, and the surrounding area.

Because of the short growing season where its farm is located, the oak trees have more growth rings. When aging whiskey encounters a growth ring in a barrel, it imparts flavor. WhiskeyPig's barrels, with their custom chars and toasts, bring tremendous complexity and depth to its Ryes, which are aged in those barrels for one to three years.

Once WhistlePig's award-winning Rye Whiskey is ready for bottling, its freshly emptied barrels are the perfect vessel for aging pure, organic, Vermont maple syrup.

ABOUT WHISTLEPIG

WhistlePig began with purchase of a farm in Shoreham, Vermont, in 2007. After a few years of deep consideration and personal reflection, the founders  committed themselves to crafting the world’s finest and most interesting Rye Whiskeys.

With help from Master Distiller Dave Pickerell, they discovered and purchased an incredible stock of 10-year-old blending Whiskey in Canada that was being profoundly misused. That initial stock, for which they are forever grateful, is what kicked off their grand adventure.

WhistlePig is the world’s most awarded Rye Whiskey and for good reason. They took an unloved grain, falling out of favor post-Prohibition, and added a dedicated band of Rye enthusiasts to bring it back to life. With a clear vision to reinvent Rye Whiskey, they went off the grid, to build whiskey their own  Vermont. They are dedicated to protect what makes Rye Whiskey great, toss out the rest, and then innovate to make it better.

ABOUT RUNAMOK

Runamok is a family-owned, Vermont-based company that started with a foundation of premium, organic maple syrup and has expanded to an array of maple and honey-based products.

It was started by husband and wife, Eric and Laura Sorkin, who began tapping their woods for syrup in Cambridge, Vermont in 2009.

They had a vision of elevating maple in new and innovative ways. Their focus
was on creating a truly unique maple syrup product. With elegant packaging, innovative flavor profiles, and the highest quality ingredients, Runamok's infused, smoked and barrel-aged maple syrups have made waves in the food world.

Runamok produces its own own maple syrup at its sugarbushes in Cambridge and Bolton, Vermont,  but even with their more than 100,000 taps, the company's maple trees do not make syrup for its needs.

To ensure its high-quality, organic supply, Runamok partners with many other sugarmakers in its area, buying maple syrup from from producers who we know are as passionate about their product and their land. Runamok is proud to support a group of more than 50 family farms and to be part of the greater agricultural community in Vermont.

Social Mission

Runamok not only committed to taking care of the land under its stewardship but to the people who make the company successful. One of its goals from the start was to offer healthcare to all of our employees, including the woods crew who consist of both seasonal and full-time people. In 2019, Runamok proudly started offering high quality, affordable health insurance to all of its employees.

In addition to providing for its employees, founder, Eric Sorkin has been advocating for paid leave with the non-profit organization, Main Street Alliance. The movement aims to promote paid leave for employees to take care of a family member, themselves or a new child.

As Eric testified before a congressional committee, “No one, least of all those in the most precarious financial positions, should have to choose between getting paid and taking care of loved ones or their own health. Likewise, why do we embrace a system where business owners must choose between their own profitability or the wellbeing of their employees?”

Another enormous challenge facing working Vermonters is the availability of child care. With that in mind, Runamok has been working with Let’s Grow Kids to start up a child care facility at its own facility. Its plan is to have the on-site facility open to its employees as well as anyone else in the community. How great would it be to know that your child is being well cared for and engaged in the same building you are working?

Environmental Mission

Runamok believes protecting the land is of utmost importance. Both maple and honey are gifts from nature, and it endeavors to show its appreciation by protecting the natural world that is a foundation for each.

Good maple syrup depends on healthy trees and so the company works to protect the soil, encourage biodiversity, and treat the land its works on gently. Honey bees rely on areas full of pesticide-free flowers, both wild and cultivated. The quality of the honey is reflected in the array of food sources available to them and so we chose beekeepers who place their hives in healthy landscapes.

Every single tree in Runamok's sugarbush will act as the lungs for the biosphere, taking in excess carbon and breathing out oxygen. The company is very proud of the fact that it has a working landscape that provides not only one of the finest ingredients from North America but also a natural air filter that is tipping the carbon ratio in the right direction.

And, honey bees are vital components of a healthy ecology. Pollinators have been increasingly threatened by pesticides and habitat loss. Supporting beekeepers ensures that these important players in our environment and food system will continue to thrive.

Runamok works to think globally with every decision it makes regarding its production process. The solar panels on its product facility’s rooftop helps to reduce the company's carbon footprint. Post-infused ingredients and barrels are passed along to other food and beverage producers to help reduce food waste.

Runamok's aim is to be not only good environmental stewards of its land, but also for the planet. Because of its efforts, the company is certified organic by the Northeastern Organic Farmers Association and also as Bird Friendly Maple by the National Audubon Society.
